DIY Rainbow Foam That’s Cheap & Easy!

When we’ve got nice weather, I’m always looking for new things that the girls can do that 1) don’t require a ton of work on my part and 2) that they’ll flip out over. So, I present to you: DIY rainbow foam #thankspinterest. I originally saw this idea over on Fun At Home With Kids and decided to give it a go!

Why I Love This DIY Rainbow Foam

This DIY rainbow foam checks off so many boxes:

  • It’s easy to make
  • It’s only takes a few ingredients (that you probably already have at home)
  • It only takes a couple of minutes to whip up
  • It’s messy, so the girls get a kick out of it
  • BUT easy enough to clean up that it doesn’t stress me out 😉

Recipe + Ingredients

I used my large KitchenAid mixer to whip this up, and that allowed me to double her original recipe. I did this recipe three times, (once for each color) and then I split each color in half (one half for each of the girls).

I put the foam on some cookie sheets, because they were right there in the kitchen with me. I would have preferred some large plastic tubs, because it the foam would have been more contained and been a little easier to play with!

  • 4 TBSP Dish Soap (x as many colors that you want to make)
  • 1/2 Cup Water (x as many colors that you want to make)
  • Food Coloring * Please note that when you use food coloring your kids need to be in clothes that you don’t care about, because it’ll stain! Or, just do what I did and have them down to their underwear and some smocks LOL. Another reason why we did this outside!
  • Put the ingredients in your mixer (or a large bowl and use a hand mixer) and whip on a high speed for about two minutes, or until the foam is SUPER fluffy and holds its shape!

I wasn’t born yesterday, so I knew this was an OUTSIDE activity – because when my kids do anything sensory, they are IN it. I had their IKEA smocks on, but I’m not sure they were necessary; I ended up just hosing them down at the end LOL.

Do your kids have a favorite messy craft? I’d love to hear about it!
